The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 14 additional confirmed cases of Lassa fever, bringing the country’s cumulative infections to 1,035.
The agency disclosed this in its Week 33 Lassa fever situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the report, the new infections were recorded between August 10 and 16 in Bauchi, Benue, Ondo and Edo states.
The NCDC also reported 252 deaths, putting the case fatality rate at 24.4 per cent. This is higher than the 18.6 per cent recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
The 14 cases represent a significant increase from the four infections reported in epidemiological Week 32, when confirmed cases were recorded in Ondo and Edo states.
During Week 32, cumulative infections stood at 1,021, while the number of deaths was 240, with a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.
The agency further stated, “The Week 32 figure represents a decline from 17 confirmed cases recorded during epidemiological Week 31, indicating fluctuations in weekly transmission.”
By the end of Week 33, a total of 23 states had recorded at least one confirmed Lassa fever case, with infections reported across 117 local government areas.
With the disease continuing to pose a public health challenge in affected communities, the NCDC said it would sustain surveillance and response efforts to monitor and contain further transmission.
