Police in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, have arrested several children and teenagers over an alleged burglary spree across multiple suburbs, with stolen property estimated at over US$10,000.
The suspects, aged 12 to 16, are believed to be behind a series of housebreakings that began in October 2025 in Nkulumane and Tshabalala, prompting fear among residents. Their arrest followed months of investigations into a rise in reported break-ins in the areas.
On January 8, 2026, the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed they were probing 20 cases of unlawful entry and theft recorded between October 15 and December 30, 2025. Items stolen included cash and household goods valued at US$8,948, ZAR13,400 and P2,350. Police said 10 juveniles helped recover some stolen items, including mobile phones and power banks.
However, a report by state broadcaster ZBC said a total of 14 juveniles aged 11 to 17 were eventually detained, with the overall value of the stolen items exceeding US$10,000.
Detective Inspector Stanley Muya of CID Nkulumane said the operation was triggered by a surge in break-ins. He explained that the arrest of four juveniles on January 4 led to the apprehension of 10 others, all linked to thefts worth over US$10,000.
The arrests have unsettled the community, with residents expressing concern over the young ages of the suspects. Some described the situation as a loss of potential, while a parent of one suspect said they were unaware of their child’s alleged activities.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele advised parents to closely supervise their children and urged residents to improve home security and avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home.
The juveniles remain in custody as legal processes continue.
