‘Death is the biggest PR’: Confusion as Destiny Boy gains almost 300k followers hours after he passes away

The death of Fuji-pop singer Afeez Adesina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has sparked widespread on social media discussions, particularly after a dramatic surge in his social media followers hours following the announcement of his passing.

Destiny Boy reportedly passed away at the age of 22 on Sunday, January 18, 2026, just months after welcoming his first child. 

The news sent shockwaves through fans and colleagues in the Nigerian music industry, many of whom took to social media to express their grief.

The late singer’s death was confirmed by popular Instagram investigative journalist Temilola Sobola, though the official cause of his passing has yet to be disclosed.

In the wake of his death, attention quickly turned to Destiny Boy’s Instagram account, where an X user noticed a sudden spike in his followers. 

Reacting to the surge, the X user wrote, “Destiny Boy gained over 200k followers immediately after his death. Life just get as e be.”

The unexpected rise in followership has sparked conversations and debates among social media users. While some questioned why the singer only received such massive attention posthumously, others noted that it is a familiar trend for artists to be celebrated more prominently after their demise.
