EFCC bursts Yahoo academy in FCT, nabs 31 suspects

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, April 9, apprehended 31 suspected internet fraudsters during a raid on a cybercrime training centre located in Becki Estate, Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suspects—made up of two alleged ringleaders and several trainees—were arrested while reportedly undergoing lessons in internet fraud. Recovered items included mobile phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic devices.

In a statement, the EFCC disclosed that investigations revealed some of the trainees had been brought in from Benue State under the false promise of legitimate employment. However, upon arrival, they were allegedly equipped with communication gadgets, computers, and software to begin training in cybercrime.

“To ensure compliance and commitment, the proprietors accommodated the recruits within the facility, restricted their movement, and confiscated their mobile phones, effectively isolating them from the outside world.

“Additionally, corporal punishment was routinely applied, with severe physical abuse inflicted on trainees who failed to comply,” the statement noted.

The commission added that the suspects will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
