Activist Aisha Yesufu has raised concerns over the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting to INEC’s recent clarification on a controversial X (formerly Twitter) account allegedly linked to its chairman, Joash Amupitan, Yesufu said the situation casts doubt on the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.
“This more than anything shows INEC under Joash Amupitan cannot be trusted to conduct free, fair and credible election. By this desperation to deny something that is so glaring, Amupitan has offered himself as a tool to be used,” she wrote.
Her remarks come amid ongoing public debate following INEC’s statement dismissing the account as fake. The commission explained that a forensic investigation, carried out with independent cybersecurity experts, found no connection between Amupitan and the viral posts.
According to INEC, the account @joashamupitan and the message “Victory is sure” were products of digital impersonation and manipulation.
