A Nigerian man has sparked widespread online reactions after recounting how his close friend was publicly rejected during a surprise proposal, only to later learn that the woman had been in another relationship for years.
The story, shared on X (formerly Twitter), has reignited discussions about trust, commitment, and double dating in contemporary relationships.
The man revealed that the incident occurred in 2015, after his friend had been dating the woman for five years.
In a grand gesture, he flew her from Abuja to Lagos to celebrate his birthday. Friends filled the house, cameras were ready, and the atmosphere was festive and hopeful. Then came the defining moment:
“He knelt down… and she said NO,” the post read.
Guests watched in shock as the carefully planned proposal fell apart in seconds. Two weeks later, the woman reportedly married another man and blocked his friend on all platforms, severing all communication.
The painful rejection was only part of the story. Mutual friends later revealed that the woman had been dating another man in Abuja for approximately two years while still in the five-year relationship.
Despite the humiliation, the man said his friend eventually found clarity. “At first, he was shattered,” he wrote.
