Afrobeats musician Seun Kuti has doubled down on his criticism of Wizkid FC, the fan group that recently described the Grammy-winning star as the “new Fela.”
Speaking during a recent Instagram Live session, Seun again voiced his displeasure over comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He said he was particularly angered by claims from some fans that Wizkid is even a bigger artiste than Fela.
Recall that Seun had earlier labelled Wizkid FC as “the most ignorant fan base in the world” in a report published by Entertainment Region.
According to Seun, branding any modern-day musician as the “new Fela” reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of his father’s legacy, noting that such assertions quickly fall apart when examined closely.
The debate drew a response from music producer Samklef, a self-proclaimed member of Wizkid FC, who accused Seun of attacking the fan base out of personal dislike for Wizkid and made disparaging remarks about Fela.
Reacting to Samklef and Wizkid FC, Seun Kuti insisted that he would never tolerate comparisons between any contemporary artiste and his late father.
He further stated that, despite Fela’s death 29 years ago, he recently earned about $120,000 simply because he is the son of the legendary musician, underscoring the enduring value of Fela’s legacy.
Taking a swipe at Wizkid FC, Seun added that just as he continues to benefit from his father’s achievements long after his passing, he questioned whether the fathers of those making such comparisons could generate similar value for their children from beyond the grave.
In his words, “Fela’s son. Fela is still blessing me from the grave 29 years later. How many of your fathers can do that from the grave? None, because your fathers are not accomplished. Wizkid and DJ Tunez are enjoying the clout, which is why they won’t come out to say, ”Stop disrespecting Fela in my name.”
