Nigerian gospel singer Shola Allyson has surprised many with a rare and candid disclosure about her marriage.
In a recent interview with Oyinmomo TV, the 54-year-old artist celebrated for her timeless love album Eji Owuro — revealed that although she is still married, she no longer lives with her husband.
She explained that the idealized version of marriage often portrayed by society has never reflected her own experience.
“I’m married, but I’m not in my husband’s house. We live separately,” she stated.
When asked whether she had ever experienced true love especially considering she sang one of Nigeria’s most memorable love songs — Shola said older generations created the illusion that love alone is enough to sustain a happy marriage.
In her words: “We lied before. Those older than us didn’t tell us it would be tough. They made us believe that if two people love each other, they’ll live happily ever after, but it’s not true. That hasn’t been my experience. I didn’t get the fairytale ending. I did everything I could to make it work.”
Her heartfelt admission has sparked widespread reactions online, with many fans expressing shock at such an open and vulnerable revelation from the singer.
