Premier League champions Liverpool have reached an agreement with Rennes on a £60 million deal for defender Jeremy Jacquet.
The package includes an initial £55 million fee, with a further £5 million in performance-related add-ons, for the 20-year-old France under-21 international. Chelsea had also been pursuing Jacquet and were widely regarded as frontrunners, but Liverpool have now secured the signing.
Jacquet is set to join Liverpool in the summer and will remain on loan at Rennes for the rest of the current season.
The move follows Liverpool’s failure to complete a deal for former Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window, with the England international joining Manchester City this month. The club also considered a loan move for Lutsharel Geertruida but ruled it out due to the complexity of the deal.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Jacquet is expected to travel to northwest England on Monday to complete a contract running until 2030, with the option of a one-year extension. Personal terms have already been agreed.
Jacquet has made 18 Ligue 1 appearances this season and is viewed as a long-term addition to Liverpool’s squad, alongside recent signings Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez.
