Manchester United outcast Mason Greenwood could be on the verge of a shock return to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are reportedly considering a move to re-sign Greenwood, a development that has already sparked debate given the sensitive nature of his past at the club.
Greenwood’s resurgence in France
According to Football Insider, United have held internal discussions about bringing back the academy graduate, who left the club following serious legal and reputational issues. Greenwood, once seen as a long-term attacking prospect for United, faced charges related to attempted rape and assault. Although the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the case due to the withdrawal of key witnesses, United conducted an internal review and decided that retaining him at the time would have been a public relations disaster.
After leaving Manchester, Greenwood spent a loan spell at Getafe in 2023, impressing on the pitch, before completing a £26 million transfer to Marseille in summer 2024. Since then, he has revitalized his career, scoring 42 goals and providing 12 assists in 63 appearances over the past 18 months. His strong form has reportedly attracted interest from clubs including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, highlighting a significant recovery in his market value.
Buy-back clause and financial considerations
When Greenwood was sold, United included protective clauses, including a 50% sell-on fee and a potential buy-back option. Football Insider reports that this clause could allow United to re-sign the 24-year-old for a fee below his current valuation.
Financially, United might benefit more from selling Greenwood to another club, potentially earning an extra £25 million or more via the sell-on clause. However, the club is said to have explored the possibility of a direct return—a move that would likely reignite scrutiny and controversy.
United are reportedly prioritizing midfield reinforcements and could consider selling captain Bruno Fernandes to fund those plans, making Greenwood’s return far from certain.
