Lionel Messi is set to unveil a 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself in India on Saturday as part of a three-day tour that has ignited excitement among fans.
The iron monument in Kolkata, depicting Messi lifting the World Cup, is part of his so-called GOAT Tour, which will cover four Indian cities and may include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
For security reasons, the 38-year-old Argentine and Inter Miami star will unveil the statue virtually rather than in person.
A “Hola Messi” fan zone has also been created in Kolkata, featuring a life-sized replica of Messi seated on a throne and a recreation of his Miami home, complete with mannequins of his family.
Football enthusiast Samir Nandy described seeing the exhibit as “a dream come true.”
“Legends are not made by success alone. It is his resilience that inspires me,” said Nandy, 64, in Kolkata. “The statue is a fitting tribute to him.”
Monty Paul, the statue’s lead sculptor, told AFP that the structure was completed in just 40 days. “It is a matter of pride to create Messi’s sculpture. It’s the tallest statue I have ever made,” he said.
During his whirlwind visit to Kolkata, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will also meet Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly.
Messi expressed his excitement about visiting India and connecting with fans. “India is a very special country, and I have fond memories from my visit 14 years ago — the fans were incredible,” he said in an official statement. “India is a passionate football nation, and I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans and sharing my love for this beautiful game.”
Following Kolkata, where Messi will play a brief friendly match, he will travel to Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. In Hyderabad, he is scheduled to attend a concert in his honour and play another friendly. Reports suggest he may meet Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi.
Messi recently won his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award after leading Inter Miami to the MLS title and topping the league in goals. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star will also lead Argentina as they defend their World Cup title in North America this coming June and July.
