The months-long search for 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard has ended in tragedy, as the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, acted alone in fatally shooting her daughter in the head.
Melodee’s body was found in Utah in early December, roughly two months after she disappeared during an impromptu mother-daughter road trip. “Maternal filicide is rare and always difficult to comprehend,” said Santa Barbara County Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown on Tuesday, December 23, describing the crime as premeditated, ruthless, and heartless. Surveillance footage showed Melodee with her mother on October 9 near the Colorado-Utah border, and investigators believe she was killed shortly thereafter.
Ashlee Buzzard was arrested on Tuesday for first-degree murder and is being held without bail. Authorities confirmed that DNA testing positively identified Melodee’s remains, discovered along the route the pair traveled during their October multi-state road trip through California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Investigators said the rental car had been disguised with wigs on the mother and daughter and temporarily switched to a New York license plate to avoid detection.
Searches of Buzzard’s home, storage locker, and the rental car yielded an expended cartridge case and a live round, which forensic testing linked to the crime scene in Utah. The FBI later confirmed through DNA analysis that the remains were a familial match to Melodee.
Authorities have not yet determined a motive, and Ashlee has reportedly been uncooperative since her arrest. Sheriff Brown noted that while these developments are critical steps toward justice, they do not lessen the profound loss suffered by the family and community.
