Rapper Wiz Khalifa facing 9 months in Romanian prison for weed

American rapper Wiz Khalifa is facing a potential nine-month jail term in Romania over a marijuana-related offence, although his lawyers are working to overturn the ruling.

On Thursday, December 18, Romania’s Constanța Court of Appeal upheld a request by the DIICOT Constanța Territorial Service, the state prosecutor’s office, seeking a prison sentence for the artist. This decision overturns an earlier ruling that had imposed a fine of 3,000 lei (approximately 700 dollars).

Sources close to the case say the sentence is not yet final, as Wiz Khalifa’s legal team has already initiated an appeal in hopes of securing a different outcome.

The case dates back to July 2024, when the rapper was arrested and briefly detained after his performance at the Beach Please Festival in Costinești. During the show, he was seen smoking marijuana on stage while dancing to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg’s song The Next Episode.

He was subsequently charged under Romania’s strict drug laws, which criminalise the possession and use of cannabis.

Legal analysts note that Romania enforces tough penalties for drug-related offences, which could make the appeal process difficult.
