Former Nigerian international footballer Osaze Odemwingie has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to stop “pampering” and pleading with foreign-born players of Nigerian descent to represent the Super Eagles.
His remarks come as the NFF continues efforts to attract talents such as Michael Kayode, Tosin Adarabioyo, Caleb Okoli, and Kingsley Ehizibue to the senior national team.
Speaking on Brila FM, the former West Bromwich Albion forward stressed that the Super Eagles’ prestige should naturally attract players, rather than requiring persuasion.
Odemwingie argued that representing Nigeria should be seen as an honour, not something to be negotiated. He noted that during his playing days, he never expected special treatment, emphasizing that wearing the national colours was already a privilege.
Reflecting on his mixed heritage, he explained that although he has ties to Russia, his football identity has always been rooted in Nigeria. He also raised concerns about the growing trend of Nigerian talents opting to represent European countries, warning that it could weaken Nigeria’s chances of competing at the highest level, including the FIFA World Cup.
The former forward further highlighted differences in player development, noting that European-trained footballers tend to be more tactically disciplined and structured from a young age. However, he expressed optimism that the trend could shift in the future, with top players choosing Nigeria out of passion and a shared goal of bringing global success to the country.
