Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau has voiced optimism that the Super Eagles will enjoy even greater success under head coach Éric Chelle following their strong showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Gusau said the team has made significant progress after the setback of failing to qualify for two consecutive FIFA World Cups, highlighting their impressive performances in Morocco where they finished third and claimed the bronze medal.
While admitting that winning the AFCON title was the main objective, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s overall display, praising their energy, resilience and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
“Our target was to win the AFCON and become champions of Africa, but we ended up finishing third with the bronze medal,” Gusau said. “Although we didn’t achieve our ultimate goal, the way the team played gave me great joy. They showed passion, resilience and strong character.”
He also acknowledged the vital role played by the Federal Government in supporting the team, crediting the National Sports Commission and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their backing, which he described as crucial to the campaign.
Reaffirming the NFF’s commitment to the Super Eagles and their technical crew, Gusau praised Chelle’s influence since his appointment, noting that the coach has made a significant impact within a year of taking charge.
Gusau added that with continued support, stability and collaboration, the Super Eagles are well placed to reach greater heights in the coming years.
