President Donald Trump claimed that Iran has given up its nuclear ambitions, with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the peace negotiations.
Trump made the disclosure on Tuesday afternoon in the Oval Office while discussing efforts to pursue a ceasefire, following earlier statements about continuing military action against Iran.
“They’re talking to us, and they’re talking sense,” Trump said. “I don’t want to say in advance, but they’ve agreed they will never have a nuclear weapon.”
When asked if he intended to send envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for direct talks, Trump responded that negotiations were already underway. “We’re in negotiations right now. They’re doing it along with Marco, JD. We have a number of people doing it. And the other side, I can tell you, they’d like to make a deal,” he said.
The comments come as the US and Iran prepare for another round of talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire, while also preparing for a potential military operation if diplomacy fails. Trump reiterated his goal for Iran to relinquish its nuclear materials entirely, describing it as obtaining the “nuclear dust.”
Meanwhile, the Department of War is reportedly preparing to deploy thousands of troops from the US Army’s 82nd Infantry Division to the Middle East. A 3,000-person brigade combat team is expected to support US and Israel operations, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
