Ugandan Army Chief Apologises for X Post Accusing US of Backing Opposition

Uganda’s army chief on Friday issued an apology to the United States after briefly accusing the U.S. Embassy of aiding opposition leader Bobi Wine, a move that sparked diplomatic concern.

Ugandan Army Chief Apologises for X Post Accusing US of Backing Opposition Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the son of President Yoweri Museveni, had earlier announced the suspension of ties with the United States, alleging that U.S. officials were involved in assisting Wine, who has been in hiding since Uganda’s disputed presidential election.

Less than an hour later, Kainerugaba reversed his position and deleted the posts. In a statement on X, he said: “I want to apologise to our great friends, the United States, for my earlier tweets that I have now deleted.”

The brief escalation and swift retraction came amid heightened political tensions in Uganda following the election and Wine’s continued absence from public view. The U.S. Embassy has not publicly commented on the accusations or the subsequent apology.
