Nigerian singer Shola Allyson has addressed the ongoing debate about her lyrical choices, explaining why she rarely mentions Jesus in her music.
In an interview on Oyinmomo TV, Allyson said she has never identified as a gospel artist.
“I’m not a religious singer. I have never introduced myself as a gospel singer. My name is Shola Allyson. I’m a singer,” she said, noting that her music reflects her personal convictions rather than religious expectations.
Responding to critics who expect her to reference Jesus more often, she said her work isn’t meant to serve as publicity for Him.
“Jesus did not instruct us to mention His name in songs, nor did He ask us to do PR for Him,” she added.
Allyson also opened up about her personal life, revealing that her marriage to Toyin Obaniyi whom she wed in 2003 is far from the idealized version many imagine.
Though still legally married and a mother of three, she disclosed that she now lives separately from her husband.
“Marriage has been a big challenge. I hear people talk about joy in marriage, but I have never experienced it,” she shared. “I can do anything for a man as long as he does not maltreat me.”
