14 wedding guests drown as boat capsizes in Kebbi

No fewer than 14 people have died after a boat carrying wedding guests capsized in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The tragedy occurred on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Gumbi village in Gumbi Ward, shortly after the passengers had escorted a bride to her husband’s residence in Gwarzo village, Ngaski LGA, according to Channels TV.

The guests were reportedly on their way back home when the boat overturned, plunging more than 100 passengers into the water.

Fourteen victims — 13 women and one child — were said to have lost their lives in the incident.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, attended the funeral prayers on Saturday and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, the local government authorities, the emirate council, and the people of Yauri.

Represented by the Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the families and the wider community to accept the incident as an act of God.

“I urge you to take this in good faith, remembering that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator,” he said.

“God acts according to His will and timing, and no one can question Him.”

He also prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased and asked that they be granted Jannatul Firdaus.

All the victims have since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
