Chelsea and West Ham fined £625k over players misconduct

Chelsea F.C. have been fined £325,000, while West Ham United F.C. must pay £300,000 after a mass confrontation during their Premier League meeting in January.

The incident at Stamford Bridge flared up deep into stoppage time when Chelsea striker Joao Pedro reacted angrily to a shove by West Ham winger Adama Traore on defender Marc Cucurella.

The situation escalated as players from both teams became involved. Following a prolonged VAR check, West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor for grabbing Joao Pedro by the neck.

In a statement, The Football Association said Chelsea were charged for failing to ensure their players avoided improper or provocative conduct around the 95th minute. West Ham faced a similar charge for not preventing their players from acting in an improper, provocative, or violent manner during the same episode. Both clubs admitted the offences.

An independent regulatory commission reviewed previous breaches of FA Rule E20.1 by the two sides before imposing the fines. The rule bars conduct considered improper, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting, or provocative.
