The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a couple, identified as Fred and Goodness, for allegedly staging their own abduction and extorting ₦10 million in ransom from family members and friends.
Police said the couple faked the kidnapping on Jan. 7, 2026, in an attempt to raise funds for the husband, who planned to return to the United States after failing to secure financial support.
A police source said the suspects contacted relatives from both families, claiming they had been kidnapped and demanding ransom. Within three days, the families reportedly raised ₦10 million, believing the money would secure the couple’s release.
According to the source, the couple jointly planned the scheme after the husband’s sponsors were unable to provide funds for his travel. “They pretended to be kidnapped and appealed to friends and family for ransom contributions,” the source said.
Another police source said the suspects arranged for the ransom to be delivered at a school in the Cappa area of Mushin, Lagos. Operatives monitoring the location observed the woman entering the premises alone, with the man arriving separately shortly afterward.
Suspicion was raised when both later emerged together carrying a bag. Officers stopped and searched them, discovering the ransom money, and immediately arrested the couple. The wife reportedly admitted to encouraging the plan.
The suspects were handed over to the police, where investigations confirmed the incident was a case of self-kidnapping.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Addebisi confirmed the arrest and said the couple would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
