Eight people have died in a road accident opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road in Jos, the capital of Plateau State. The crash, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, involved a trailer and a bus carrying students from the University of Jos.
Eyewitnesses reported that eleven people were on the bus. Seven were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim later died in the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to eight. Three others are receiving treatment, and all the victims were male. Witnesses said the bus was speeding and attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver, causing the driver to lose control.
The Federal Road Safety Corps’ Public Education Officer, Peter Longsan, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday, saying: “On 11th December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call around 0230 hours about a road crash opposite Unity Bank on Zaria Road, Jos. The crash involved a trailer and a bus carrying eleven people, reportedly University of Jos students. Seven were found dead at the scene, and another later died in the hospital, bringing the total to eight. Three others are receiving medical attention. All victims were males.”
Sector Commander Olajide Mogaji urged motorists to avoid night trips, speeding, reckless driving, driving under the influence, or driving when fatigued or unwell, highlighting these as leading causes of road fatalities. “The government wants you alive to enjoy life, especially during this festive season and beyond,” he said.
