Tragedy has hit three local government areas in Kano State, where five people — including a 10-year-old girl — lost their lives in separate incidents involving a well collapse, a fall into a well, and a residential fire.
The spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the series of incidents in a statement released on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
The first occurred in Badume Kanawa Village, Bichi Local Government Area, where three men died while attempting to re-dig a well. Abdullahi explained that the rope supporting one of the victims, 65-year-old Sa’idu Gada, snapped while he was deep inside the well.
In an attempt to rescue him, his son, 20-year-old Sani Isyaku, climbed in but also became trapped. A third man, 60-year-old Yakubu Abdullahi, followed in a further rescue attempt but also failed to make it out.
Fire Service personnel eventually pulled all three men out unconscious, but they were later confirmed dead. Their bodies were handed over to DSP Kabiru Iliyasu of the Badume Police Division.
In a separate incident in Danbatta Local Government Area, a 10-year-old boy, Hassan Iliyasu Haruna, fell into a well and died before emergency responders could reach him.
The third fatality occurred in Badawa Layin Day, Nassarawa Local Government Area, where a 10-year-old girl died in a house fire on Thursday, December 4, 2025. The fire destroyed two bedrooms in the building. She was rescued in an unconscious state but was later confirmed dead.
Speaking after the incidents, the Director of the Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged residents to avoid entering wells during emergencies, warning that such actions often lead to more casualties rather than successful rescues.
He advised the public to immediately call emergency responders when accidents occur, stressing that trained personnel are better equipped to handle such situations safely.
