The family of Lionel Messi has disclosed that his father, Jorge Messi, is receiving treatment for an undisclosed medical condition and has appealed for sensitivity amid widespread speculation about his health.
In a statement issued through Messi’s media office, the family confirmed that the 68-year-old is currently under medical care.
“Jorge is going through a health situation,” the statement said.
While no details were provided about the illness, the family stated that he remains under medical supervision and is responding positively to treatment.
“He is currently under medical observation, recovering and progressing favourably within his current condition,” the statement added.
The clarification came after false reports emerged in Argentina claiming that Jorge Messi had died.
“At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence and humanity,” the family said. “A person’s health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest.”
The family noted that any updates regarding Jorge Messi’s condition would be communicated through official channels.
Earlier, Messi alluded to a personal challenge following Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening FIFA World Cup match, saying he was facing a difficult personal situation, though he did not elaborate.
Meanwhile, the Argentine captain delivered a historic performance in the match, registering the first FIFA World Cup hat-trick of his career.
At 38 years and 357 days old, Messi became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick, surpassing the previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo was 33 years and 122 days old when he netted a hat-trick against Spain during the 2018 World Cup group stage.
Messi opened the scoring against Algeria with a long-range effort in the 17th minute before adding a second from a rebound in the 60th minute as Argentina cruised to a comfortable victory.
