A student of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Michael Coker, has died after reportedly collapsing during an examination at the university’s Victoria Island study centre in Lagos. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 16, when Coker suddenly slumped while preparing to log into the exam system. Witnesses claimed he lay on the floor for several minutes, struggling to breathe, before assistance arrived. One student, Bukola, alleged that a female invigilator initially prevented students from helping, instructing them to return to their seats despite his worsening condition.
Bukola said concern grew among students as Coker continued gasping, with delays in getting medical attention. She claimed it took several minutes before a nurse was called and additional time before he was moved from the hall. Coker was later taken out of the building and rushed to hospital, but students were asked to continue with their exams. After the exam ended, they were informed that he had passed away. Another student and class representative, Prince Preskit, confirmed that Coker collapsed just before the exam began, adding that he was taken to Bonny Camp Hospital and later referred elsewhere due to the need for oxygen. Bonny Camp Hospital, however, denied rejecting the patient, stating that he was referred to another facility better equipped to handle his condition.
