NPFL sanctions Wikki Tourists with heavy fines and stadium ban after Katsina United clash

Wikki Tourists have been handed stiff sanctions by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over serious security and disciplinary breaches during their clash with Katsina United last Sunday.

The league found the Bauchi-based club culpable for failing to provide adequate security at the match venue, a lapse that allowed unauthorised persons access to restricted areas of the stadium. The NPFL said the breach contravened regulations designed to protect players, officials and the integrity of the competition.

Tensions reportedly escalated during the game as Wikki Tourists supporters engaged in disorderly conduct, including throwing stones and other dangerous objects onto the pitch. The league said the actions endangered Katsina United players and match officials and risked bringing the game into disrepute.

The NPFL also cited the club’s failure to control its fans, which led to the harassment and injury of match officials and a member of the visiting team. In addition, officials and members of the away side were reportedly held inside the stadium for several hours after the match, while play was delayed for 18 minutes at one point.

As part of the penalties, the NPFL imposed several fines, including ₦2 million for inadequate security and ₦1.5 million to cover compensation and medical expenses. Further sanctions were issued for unsporting conduct, the throwing of dangerous objects, and the post-match detention of officials and the visiting team.

Beyond the financial penalties, the league ordered that Wikki Tourists relocate their home matches from Bauchi indefinitely, with future fixtures to be played at Jos Stadium in Plateau State.

The club has 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the decision. The ruling highlights the NPFL’s renewed commitment to enforcing stricter security measures, professionalism and matchday discipline amid ongoing concerns over fan conduct and safety in Nigerian football.
