Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has stated that she has no intention of getting married again.
According to Punch, the revelation is contained in a newly released 600-page biography titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari. The book, authored by Dr. Charles Omole, Director-General of the Institute for Police and Security Policy Research, was launched at the State House in Abuja on Monday, December 15, 2025.
In the biography, Aisha Buhari’s position on remarriage is described as a personal and practical decision rather than a moral declaration. The author notes that with children and grandchildren already in her life, she considers one marriage sufficient.
The book explains that her stance deliberately avoids cultural labels often imposed on widows, where remarriage is sometimes viewed either as disloyalty or as saintly restraint. Instead, it portrays her choice as a simple and thoughtful definition of her future.
Looking ahead, the former First Lady is said to be embracing a more reserved public life. She plans to divide her time between family, philanthropy, and travel, while remaining actively involved in humanitarian causes.
According to the biography, she intends to spend quality time with her grandchildren, ensuring they remember her as an active presence in their lives rather than a distant public figure. She will also continue overseeing the Aisha Buhari Foundation and the cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has already carried out more than 200 medical procedures.
Dr. Omole describes her decision as a personal reset after decades in the political spotlight, noting that she is stepping away from public expectations to focus on healing, service, and personal fulfillment.
The book reflects on her marriage to the late former president as both a source of support and challenge, noting that while it provided her a platform to speak out, it also exposed her to criticism and exclusion within political circles.
Muhammadu Buhari married Aisha Buhari (née Halilu) on December 2, 1989, following his divorce in 1988. Born in 1971 in Adamawa State, she became Nigeria’s First Lady when Buhari assumed office in 2015.
The couple were married for 35 years and had five children together. Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
